June 16, 1918 (from Violet’s father, D. Henry Wood … spelling not altered)
Dear Henry Call,
My dear boy, I was thinking that you might like to here from me. Henry we are all well and hale at present and hope these few lines reaches you the same. It has been about nine years since I saw you, or it just seems that long. This is Sunday morning. There being no Sunday School we are at home. There is agoing to be a meeting this afternoon, but I am not agoing as it is my watering turn at 2:00 P.M. and we need the water. I tell you Henry, it was never drier at this time of year. The wells is agoing down every day. Our crops is looking good pretty well. We are agoing to cut grass this week. Stuff is selling fine this summer.
Last Sunday Irvin and Mary were down and we had ice cream and I took one for you, but lots rather had had you here, and then you could have had all you could have eaten. I’ll tell you Henry, I miss you, and am looking forward to the time to come when you will be back again. Having the same good old times as we used to. And don’t think it will be long. I am thankful, Henry, that you are doing as good as you do, and that you are having a good time. I think of you daily and wonder how you are and what you are doing and how you are feeling and how I would love to see you.
I was in Salt Lake yesterday when a lot of drafted men came in, and I tell you they were a lively bunch. It crossed my mind back to my boy who was at Boulder, Colorado. Henry, our ward has been taxed $27,000.00 and they said my share was $300.00, so I signed up to pay $300.00 this month. I am no fighter, but I am going to try to do my share some other way. That could be just as much the same. Violet is in playing the piano to pass the time. At times she is really blue, but she’s pretty brave, better than I thought she would be, and I am thankful. I can say the same thing for you. Henry, Ruben, and I are pretty chummy in Salt Lake. I think he is doing pretty well. I am glad, Henry, that you can defend the principles that we believe in such an intelligent way. You sure have the upper hand on them. I will close at this time.
Henry, I will pray God’s bounteous blessings while absent from home. With health and love, and my family joins in love to you, nightie night.
May God Bless You,
D.H. Wood
