Letter #6 May 22, 1918
Bountiful, Utah
My Very Dear Henry,
I received your welcome letter yesterday. It surely does help me and makes my life brighter to hear from you. Delores laughs at me about my letters and me watching for the mailman. Well I don’t care, fire away, I could stand three a day, one before or after each meal. There goes my selfishness again. Have you received your other letters and your dish towel? Does The Clipper seem homelike? Mamma thought those other papers would be accepted, too. My pen is a fright this morning. I washed it out but it hasn’t got down to the blue ink. Hazel has the good pen so if you want to see good writing, her letter has it. Well, you can’t expect much from a scrub. I don’t know what Hazel is telling you, so if we seem cross please pardon it. What do you want me to tell you? Oh yes, I know almost nothing. Ha! Ha! You thought I was going to say everything didn’t you? Why Henry dear, you know better than that. I went to the funeral yesterday. There wasn’t so many except relatives, and besides, it takes so many people to look like a large group in our meetinghouse. Your mother was there. I told her what was in my letter. She got a letter from David [Henry’s older brother] yesterday. He sent the money home for he didn’t get his furlough. I think he will get it later, but so many are away now. I think that is why he didn’t get it now. Bro. Wadoupps said he had sent Omer’s. Hazel was just called to the door so I read her letter. If I could write as well as she could, I would write all day. Mamma just called me to come and meet the lady. She used to live here. I was off to a party last night. Nancy and Blanche Holbrook gave a party for Fred. All the neighbors both old and young and relatives were there. We had a fine time, or at least they seemed to. We got home around 12:30 pm. I thought of what happened a week ago about that time or a little later. I will never forget that night if I live to be a hundred years old, will you? Well Henry dear, I must have told you wrong about the two marriages for I haven’t heard of any yet. I’m afraid there would be one, if a certain soldier came home and wanted one. You ought to hear me talk to the folks. I am some talker. Is George taking the same course as you? What did Clyde choose? Are you still living in the gym? Well Henry dear, what you said about that lifestyle not changing your clean honest life I firmly believe. Our God will surely protect you, for only He knows how many prayers are given up for you. How do you think you will like your work? I hope it is something that will keep you in this country. Is the school what you thought it would be? I wrote to Clarence the other day. Bro. Bartholomew was here just now and he says he is fine. They want to get a furlough for him. I see by Hazel’s letter that she is going to take me to the show Saturday. Oh Henry, everyone is so good to me. I feel as if I was not worth it all. My greatest desire, Henry, is to someday be able to show, through my work for you, as well as my words, my deep love for you. I hope you enjoyed the candy. It isn’t much, but I want to be doing something for you all the time. Perhaps you won’t see it all now, but I hope you will someday. While I was cracking nuts I hit my finger and scared Delores. Well, I’m afraid she won’t get this in, so will close.
As ever, your loving Sweetheart,
Violet
Write as often as your work will permit.
P.S. Will write more when I have a whole envelope. Have you written to any of the kids? No Primary or Sunday school now. Hazel just read her letter. I’m glad you have one good letter, if mine isn’t.
2nd P.S. Sorry about the shortened schooling, but if it’s the Lord’s will, we must accept. Excuse this jumbled letter, but I’m afraid the letter will be too fat so space must be utilized.
(FYI:) Fountain pens wear to fit the user's hand
The nib of a fountain pen is made from a very hard material (usually iridium or a similar metal) that is supposed not to wear. However, in years of use, the pen will develop a smooth, flat spot corresponding to the user's normal writing position. If another user with a slightly different angle tries to use the pen, the flat spot will not be placed exactly right, and the pen won't write optimally. The most extreme case occurs when you are right handed and use a pen that a leftie has been writing with for a long time (or vice-versa).
